Andy Geppert’s books are always just a gorgeous read – the witty humour and the beautifully gentle illustrations combine to make something sensational every time. And this one is no exception and, really, starts with the most basic premise but turns into something quite extraordinary.
It begins with Elly’s question of ‘Would you like a balloon?’, and we’ve all been there with ‘make it bigger!’, ‘no, it’s too big! it will pop!’ ,until the balloon escapes and comes up with a hilarious contractual agreement for any future inflations. Aside from avoiding all exhortions related to increased size and anything potentially damaging such as spiky, cutty and bitey things, a final demand is that the balloon in question must not be abandoned when it is small, old and shrinkly (frankly, I know exactly how that feels!). Andy’s take on these clauses will have kids laughing aloud: Spiky Things – Cacti that like cuddles, and cows with really long horns. Roses, garden forks, food forks, pitchforks and cranky cats. Also, bees with pointy bums. With the pinky promise made, the balloon is once again inflated to ‘just right’ size. Though a relatively simple storyline, there is a wealth of potential conversation and learning to be had particularly around decision-making, fears and respect. There is also the springboard to somesc
The gorgeous monochromatic illos, lots of white space with just the splash of yellow is stylish and keeps the focus completely on the unusual and quirky narrative. It is, without doubt, one of my favourite picture books so far this year and I am sure that your kiddos will love it equally. I eagerly look forward to more of Andy’s work which is always so refreshingly different. Highly recommended for little readers from around 5 upwards.
