Rethinking Termites through Gurindji eyes ABC Listen
This is, quite simply, a completely breathtaking and remarkable book which almost defies description.
It uses both storytelling and artwork, as well as a combination of science and cultural knowledge, to inform about the lifecycle, habits and social behaviour of termites, their relationship to spinifex, and the importance of these creatures in their traditional relationship, particularly between grandmothers and their grandchildren, in Gurindji culture.
This astonishingly beautiful book is also the result of a collaboration between 30 individuals, each bringing their own strengths and skills to the project – and, arguably, most significantly it is also an alliance of First Nations and non-Indigenous creators.
So:
*it provides first-hand knowledge of the cultural practices around the use of the termites,
* it is told through story and Language,
*it shares insight into the entomology of these termites,
* it provides us with an understanding of the familial practices of the Gurindji people,
*it is an exemplary instance of sharing ideas and information across cultures,
*it showcases some stunning artwork,
*it highlights the importance of ecological awareness as well as the importance of preserving original languages and knowledge,
* it shows all readers that there is a very clear path to true Reconciliation (at a time when so many blockades are being erected by those with dubious motives)
– and along with all that, it will thoroughly engage and fascinate children.
It doesn’t get any better than that IMO.
There are marvellous aspects to tick off here. The use of three languages: English, Gurindji and Gurindji Kriol which are all distinguished by using a different coloured font. The text is delivered in both language and English, with accompanying ‘Did You Know’ call-outs. There are photographic illustrations as well as original artwork. The book concludes with additional information including reference to the Wave Hill Walk-off and the project itself.
I am absolutely overwhelmed by the scope, beauty and purpose of this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is, without a doubt, the absolute MUST buy for your collection and if it is not a multiple award winner in the next twelve months, I will be more than disappointed (my views on awards will be seriously confirmed).
Get it. I don’t care if you have spent all your budget. Just get it!
