This new picture book from Juliet and Ford St is a fun and colourful excursion in curiosity for your young readers. It has been inspired by both The Wizard of Oz and Juliet’s own adorable Westie, Bryce.
Little Ruby is idly making shapes from the clouds above when rain starts, and a rainbow appears. She wonders what might be at the end of the rainbow, and also wonders how she might find out.
On her way back to the house, she passes Scarecrow but he’s no help at all. Then she spies Metal Man in the barn, and he can’t say a word either. Outside the barn, her soft toy Lion is sitting in her wagon, waiting for her – but no, he’s got nothing to offer as well.
The only thing to do is find out for herself, so raincoat donned, she sets off with Tavish. With the rainbow arching right overhead, it’s hard to know which end to choose but running through paddocks and climbing over fences, reveals nothing exceptional.
But when they turn for home, it appears the rainbow ends right at their house. And inside, with the delicious smells of lunch cooking, and the warmth and smiles of Aunty Anne, Ruby realises that at the end of the rainbow is love. It is a feel-good story that will offer you some valuable conversations around wonder, curiosity, and what treasure means to individuals. with little people. Further, some fabulous opportunities for making rainbows, colour mixing and other science activities would be very appropriate. The illustrations are just fabulous – I know I would certainly be scheduling some art sessions to do similar collages with upcycled art. A real bonus is the activities provided, which every busy educator appreciates.
Recommended for little humans from around 4 – 7 years old.
