Be careful what you wish for is almost always good advice. In this instance, it most definitely is. The text is simplicity itself, but the illustrations are what tell this most hilarious story. ‘Nothing ever happens!’ ‘Every day is always the same.’ ‘Same old rock. Same old shell.’ ‘Same old seaweed. Same old starfish.’ If only something amazing and extraordinary and unexpected would happen …
And when it does happen your kiddos will rock with laughter, just as I did – as did The Kid when I shoved it at her and said “You’ll love this!”.
Heidi’s gift with this understated, subtle (sometimes dark) humour is one I particularly value. When I was discussing this new book (before I’d read it) with Tania Ingram last weekend, my comment was that creators like Jon Klassen and Emily Gravett not only crack me up, but also every child audience with whom I share.
Some people think kiddos love that over-the-top obvious, slapstick type comedy and while that is true, I think they often under-estimate even the Littles’ ability to discern satire or subtlety.
Heidi’s illustrations, and particularly the changing perspective as these two bored fish moan about their dreary existence, will have your readers in pure fits of hilarity. And the bold, beautiful vibrant colours used absolutely beg to springboard to an art session. I can easily envisage a whole wall mural with these characters taking centre stage..
Do yourself and your Littles from around 3 years upwards a huge favour, and get onto this one ASAP. Very easily a ๐๐๐๐๐ from both me and The Kid. It’s a cracker!
