Just because it has taken me so long to get to this, is no indication of its worth. It was one of the unfortunates that got caught up in the Great House Move, and when it recently came to light again, I thought I would keep it till Picture Book Month.
This lovely narrative focuses on mother and child exploring the beach and all its treasures on one of those windswept days when the shore is deserted, and one can have it all to oneself.
The Kid and I have always loved the beach and especially those kind of days. Her mum wasn’t so keen and only occasionally would come with us, but when she did she was surprised how much she enjoyed the simple pleasure of spending time poring over those small treasures with a child who was always fascinated.
This mother and child roam the dunes, build fancy castles, decorate these with their precious finds of shells and sea beads, float feathers, and imagine many wonderful things. These are the days like magic. No need for expensive outings, when you take your imagination and the one you love along.
Your Littles will love making connections with their own visits to the beach, particularly if, like my neighbourhood schools, all in close proximity to the sea. Jennifer Goldsmith’s illustrations are so evocative, and are a perfect match for this very lyrical text.
Highly recommended for readers from around 3 years upwards.
