Those of us still working with children know all too well just how greatly they were impacted by the pandemic, both at the time, as well as with the continuing after-effects. So any book that we can share with Smalls to encourage some reflection on anxious times, strategies for better mental health, and empowering kiddos to embrace the power of their imagination works for me.
This is a sweet book that tells the story of Dave, who was so disappointed when his family trip to the snow was cancelled due to Coronavirus, but finally gets to take his holiday. Despite the gloom of the pandemic, Dave and his parents have a wonderful adventure, but especially Dave’s first snowman, whom he names Sam, is a highlight.
Dave feels a special connection with Sam, almost as that of a friend. But when Sam melts – as is a snowman’s wont – while Dave is away doing something else, it is hard for Sam to accept. Then his mum tells him the story of The Beloved Snowman and makes it so much easier to accept Sam’s disappearance – because, as we know, when you love someone, they never really leave you, no matter what.
It is a gentle story which could very easily be used from kiddos as young as Prep up to middle primary. I venture to say, it would also make a great springboard for older children to write their own stories of a similar thread, especially for those upper school projects of writing their own picture books. There was certainly a very diverse age range at the recent book launch, and much positive feedback which would indicate that this so. And there would be plenty of fun to be had making their own snowmen as an art activity!
Recommended for readers from around 4 years upwards.
