Because I don’t have little kids personally, nor do I watch much TV, I was not at all familiar with this song, though naturally, very aware of Justine Clarkie’s enduring popularity with Smalls. Now that I hear it, I think it is quite lovely and a very special way to lead into Xmas for little humans (I imagine there will be many Prep or Year 1 classes singing this at end-of-year concerts!).

This charming picture book is adapted from the song, and illustrated by the fabulous Heath McKenzie who brings the characters involved in a lively and relatable way. There’s a diverse cast as well, with family and friends of all ages, clearly in an Australian setting.

Kiddos will love picking out details like the gal-iron rainwater tank, and the blue heeler pup and they will laugh at the same pup tangled up in a string of lights, and pretend reindeer antlers going past the windows. It’s simple but very effective and the tie-in with the song will make it super popular.

All in all, it makes for a perfect intro to my own blog Countdown to Christmas. Recommended for your Littles from around 3 years upwards.
