This is another happy anniversary edition that takes me right back to the start of my t-l career. If only I had a dollar for every time I’ve read this one to my kiddos! It’s another perfect example of a picture book that can be used in multiple ways as valuable adjunct to a teaching program for any age group, from Smalls to Seniors.
With its echoes of Alice and her foray into fantastical settings, this is the story of an ordinary weekly Sunday visit between granddaughter and grandfather, in which they do all their usual activities: playing cards, tea and cakes, gardening and housework, while all the time they are, apparently, surrounded by Dali-esque incongruities and absurdities.
Arguably most ridiculous of all is that the child thinks there is something odd happening but can’t quite put her finger on it, despite all the craziness surrounding her – the Smalls just hoot with laughter at this idea.
Readers absolutely LOVE searching out all the quirky details in these spreads. For older readers examining the artwork in close detail and identifying inter-contextual references and visual metaphors/allegories makes for fascinating sessions.
This special edition has the wonderful bonus of backmatter in which David shares some of his process in the making of the book. The very fact that this book is still so widely loved and well used, is testament to its quality [it’s certainly a far cry from doggerel rhymes and endless fart humour of many of the recent offerings].
My prediction is that it is well and truly time for you to update your current copy and what better time to do that than now. And do take advantage of the plentiful resources to support this one. It’s a 5 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 rating with no hesitation! Do keep posted for an upcoming Q&A with David -it’s sure to be a good ‘un!
Bamboozled CAA
Love this idea from Windang Public School’s 2020 Book Week. Why not have a Bamboozled Day of your own?
Wednesday: Bamboozled Book
Parade. Our Book Week parade is a
little bit different this year due to
Covid-19. All classes have read the
book “Bamboozled by David Legge,
which is about a girl who visits her
Granddad in his very strange and
mixed up house. We are asking all
students to come to school looking
“Bamboozled”. This means wearing
things that do not go together, wearing
odd socks or shoes, clothes on
backwards and strange hairstyles.
