If you read my review of the 20th anniversary edition of How to Train Your Dragon you will know how this series holds a special place in my heart, and will forever. So it’s super exciting that we get to enjoy a new series featuring our favourite characters, be they human or dragon. Especially when so many of us, especially The Kid and I [despite her now being 20!] are panting with anticipation about the forthcoming live action movie.
Gobber the Belch has started the Isle of Berk’s Training School for Vikings and Dragons, and thus far it appears that Hiccup is going to bottom out in every class. The first class of the Art of Battle was meant to be trouble-free but it doesn’t get off to a great start with the gale-force winds and goes downhill from there.
Hiccup’s best friend, Camicaze, is missing and he has no idea why she’s not at school. Readers, however, are privy to this information. Camicaze is in QUITE a PREDICAMENT.
When bottles with mysterious bottles are washed up, Stoick the Vast is at first puzzled but when the messages contained within the bottles are deciphered, Hiccup quickly springs into action – because it’s apparent nobody else is going to, and a shyster soothsayer has completely bamboozled the Chief.
Hiccup and (a reluctant) Fishlegs take off to rescue Camicaze and soon discover the cause of the extreme weather – a Thunderwith Doomslayer out at sea! The entire expedition, rescue and subsequent near-misses but ultimate success of Hiccup’s bravery will have your readers completely engaged.
The book also has much pertinent information about types of dragons and even a Dragonese dictionary, so that kiddos, like Hiccup, can have the skill of conversing with their dragon.
As always, SO much fun, both text and Cressida’s iconic illustrations. Honestly, it just never gets tired. I suggest you need more than one copy so get them on your order list and bring out all your other Cressida Cowell titles for a big dragonish display, ready for the June release of the film
It goes without saying that it’s a flying-high 5 πππππ rating from me. You might also like one of my favourite quick dragon activities to add to your repertoire. I’ve made these with many kids over the past few years and they are always a hit.
