Last ‘sky’ book for the day and I have to be honest. I’d not even heard of the Murchison’s Meteorite, but it’s not really a topic that would often grab my attention, and to be fair at the time of the event, I was only just starting high school – so had plenty of other stuff on my mind, although, of course, the moon landing was huge.
So, for me, as well as it will be for your children, this is an interesting narrative non-fiction that will provide information as well as an engaging story. While main character, Lucky, is fictional along with her discovery of a piece of the fallen meteorite, the fact remains that the Murchison meteorite and the pieces of space rock discovered were a startling event which drew worldwide attention, and which has provided rich information about the origins of Earth and – stardust!!
So Lucky’s story is a fun way to get into the information, of which there is plenty in the back matter, and also, naturally, a very useful addition to any UoI on Space/the Universe. And with the masterful Mark Greenwood [charming man who I had the pleasure of hosting in my Red Hill Primary library] handling the text, and the madly talented Lucia Masciullo, one of our favourite local creators, creating her always delightful illustrations, this is also a bonus title for any kiddo interested in earth sciences, space and astronomy.
As always with a CSIRO Publishing title there is also useful additional support with teacher resources and it gets 5 ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ rating for kiddos from Prep up to around Year 4/5.
