Odd sometimes, that you get similar books within such a short time of each other. Over the past decade or so, it has happened numerous times. So yes, this is another book titled Dogs with Jobs.
It will be a great companion book for the one reviewed earlier this month as it goes into much more depth for the various types of assistance dogs and more general information on dogs themselves (as you would see looking at the internals.
For each category of service dog there is a ‘Pawsition Vacant’ which details the necessary criteria for the hound and what type of jobs they might do and some of the breeds that are most often selected for that role. There are some different ‘jobs’ in this one to the previously reviewed book and it does also include some spotlights on particular dogs e.g. Shirley the Hypo Hound, who helps to monitor her person’s – Rebecca – glucose levels. She does this by detecting changes in Rebecca’s breathing and can even open the fridge to get juice for her (providing the needed glucose).
This would be a really good book for those kids who are looking for more than just an anecdotal style of information and both author, Andrea, and illustrator Julia have done a cracking job of putting together a really attractive and engaging non-fiction. And of course, the whole package is Hardie Grant’s usual superior standard. It’s a career canine 5 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶 rating.
