Random Reviews and Ramblings from Redcliffe

  • My Tiny Universe – Maryam Master

Pan Macmillan September 2026 ISBN: 9781761776670 RRP: $16.99 If I’m strictly honest about it – and you should know by now that I am – I’m a little ‘over’ the post-apocalyptic style narratives but there are exceptions. Believe me, this is one of them. From the first page to the last I was utterly invested…

  • Happy Book Week 2026!

If I’m completely honest I will say there’s not much that I miss about my work of 30 years – except when it comes to the special events, the displays and – of course! – the dressing up! But I love seeing what others are doing so here are a few ‘bookish’ books I’ve saved…

  • The Adventures of Squidape – John Stanton

  • Odd Cat Out!: Cat School – Rose Robbins

New South Books Scallywag Press Rose Robbins 9781836300397/August 2026/AUD$19.99, NZD$22.99 This first in a new trilogy by London author Rose Robbins, who writes from her own personal experience, will make for a great addition to your inclusive collection. Framed as anthropomorphic young cats, the narrative revolves around two friends, Tangle and Eno, starting at their…

  • Animal Force – Cerise Madsen

New South Books Publisher: Midnight Sun 9781922858740/July 2026/AUD$17.99, NZD$19.99 This would be a useful book for a middle-grade serial read to ‘read-around-your-topic’ in environmental themes especially. Although the publisher notes suggest 6 years +, personally I feel it is more suited to older and more discerning readers who would be better able to absorb some…

  • Joey and the Junjardy – Allison Rocca. Illustrated by Brenton E. McKenna

UQP June 2026 ISBN: 9780702271137 RRP: $17.99 I was already keen to read this one and when I started in and realised it is set in Wakka Wakka country, immediately felt a connection. My first teaching post in 1994 was Nanango SS – yes, on Wakka Wakka lands – so for several years I taught…

  • Prickles – Phil Cummings & Jennifer Goldsmith

Scholastic Australia April 2026 ISBN: 9781760266028 ISBN-10: 1760266027 RRP: $26.99 This is just an absolutely delightful (as usual) from Phil Cummings with an assistance dog who doesn’t just assist her human. Prickles is an alley cat. It’s not a great life what with weather and dangers, but it does have good moments like stretching out on windowsills…

  • A Light on the Rocks – Helen Edwards

Publisher: Riveted Press January , 2026 ISBN13: 9781764007191 LIST PRICE: AU$ 17.99 / NZ$ 19.99 I’ve quickly come to realise that Helen’s historical novels are impeccably researched and completely engrossing, so much so that it is not just your young readers who will enjoy them, but also adults. As I have mentioned previously I, for…

  • Woof woof! Double the Dog Delight

Today (as I write this) is International Dog Day and many of my friends with doggos are sharing their pals. I thought it would be a good opportunity to write these two reviews to go up after the last of the Birdie Num Num titles this week. So here we go! My Name is Jemima…

  • Ava Spark: Hello, I’m here! – Alex Field. Illustrated by Joanna Bartel.

New Frontier Publishing May 2025 ISBN : 978-1-923145-92-4 PRICE : $16.99 Meeting Ava Spark will be something quite different for most of your readers, I think. While they may already be aware or even familiar with some methods of communication, especially AUSLAN/sign language, which many schools are incorporating into their programs, not so many will be aware…
