  • At School I’ll Grow – Carly Gardiner. Illustrated by Caroline Keys.

Little Steps Publishing Boolarong Press October 2024 ISBN : 978-1-922678-35-5 RRP: $16.99 This is a pretty simple picture book aimed squarely at those Smalls beginning their school journey. It offers a rhyming description of what might be expected to happen in an average classroom [except for the fact of just 11 children in front of the…

  • It’s Christmas Time in Brisbane – Wendy Kelly. Illustrated by Magdalena Almevo Nocea.

Boolarong Press 2017 ISBN 9781925236590 RRP: $19.99 Yes, I thought I had finished! But this is a late arrival. It’s not a newly published title, but I only just discovered its existence recently (thanks to Quick Brown Fox! for the heads up and Boolarong Press for the speedy sending!) and with perfect timing it was…

  • Those Girls -Pamela Rushby

Walker Books Australia April 2024 ISBN13:9781760657840 Australia RRP:$19.99 New Zealand RRP:$22.99 Pamela Rushby’s books are always a treat. For me though, it’s a given that those historical fictions set in Brisbane are the most fascinating. Because I didn’t grow up here, I knew a bare minimum of the city’s history prior to moving here in…

  • Cricket by Bluey

Penguin Australia December 2023 ISBN: 9781761049415 Imprint: Puffin RRP: $16.99 We know when the season changes in Brisbane. The jacarandas are blooming and the local cricketers are back in the parks and ovals. Of course, there’s a few other matches on TV as well *wink* and, altogether, we know that spring is here, summer is on its way,…

  • Borderland – Graham Akhurst

UWA Publishing October 2023 ISBN: 978760802646 RRP: $22.99 This is a really fresh perspective on First Nations YA, and was a hugely enjoyable and gripping read.  Jono and Jenny have known each other all their lives and have just graduated as the inaugural First Nations scholarship students from their private school. Both enrol at Brisbane’s…

  • Scar Town Book Launch

What a terrific way to spend an evening! Catching up with Tristan Bancks after a few years, also seeing Deborah Abela again, for the official Brisbane launch of Scar Town, at Where the Wild Things Are. The Kid came along as well and it was a hugely enjoyable presentation. Isobelle Carmody was also in the…

  • My Dream Time – Ash Barty

Harper Collins Australia November 2022 ISBN: 9781460762820 ISBN 10: 1460762827 Imprint: HarperSports AU List Price: 49.99 AUD Like many others, I am a huge admirer of Ash -though I am no fan of tennis per se. This vibrant young woman has completely captivated the nation with her unfailing professionalism, humility, grace and low-key humour. She has become a stand-out…

  • Not a Book Review!

We all know the last two years have, at times, been quite fraught and definitely frustrating. The Kid and I had a trip to Thailand that buckled in the first few months of Covid (still waiting on perhaps some refund from Thai Airways after them going belly-up) ……..our usual annual trip to NSW to visit…
