Random Reviews and Ramblings from Redcliffe

  • The Unfinished Business: Book #1 – Stephanie Campisi

Fitzroy Books New South Books Stephanie Campisi 9781646036752/ July 2026/AUD$24.99, NZD$27.99 Of course I got it read before the stroke of midnight on All Hallows! and what a perfectly delicious ghostly read it is. It is absolutely hilarious throughout but with a gentle thread of grief and yearning underlying that. Dari’s mum, Celine, is frantically…

  • Who Said Boo? – Jeanne Willis/Brian Fitzgerald

New South Books Scallywag Press October 2026 9781836300373 AUD$29.99, NZD$34.99 I love Jeanne Willis‘ books, though I haven’t read nearly enough of them and Dr Xargle’s Book of Earthlets has been a firm favourite for many years – I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve shared it with cackling audiences of kiddos.…

  • The Lost Island – Samantha Wheeler. Illustrated by Anke Noack.

UQP August 2026 ISBN: 9780702271182 RRP: $17.99 We can always depend on Samantha Wheeler, on of our local authors, to deliver an engaging and thoughtful middle grade novel. Her ability to create characters to whom readers gravitate and put them into situations that enable those readers to explore emotions, attitudes and problem-solving has been amply…

  • Scare B’n’B – Catherine Doyle

Bloomsbury June 2026 ISBN 9781526655141 Imprint Bloomsbury Children’s Books RRP: $16.99 Well this is a complete departure from the previous Catherine Doyle books I’ve reviewed which were all far more magic realism, echoing folk tales and legends and ‘serious’. But this is very different – hilarious fun whilst also taking a good look at family…

  • Nanny Tobbins and the Midnight Plan – Lucie Stevens

Harper Collins Australia May 2026 ISBN: 9781460766538 RRP; $18.99 Nanny Tobbins #1 was great fun and liberally laced with solid historical references. Now #2 continues the fantasy six months on with Bertie once again finding herself in the midst of misadventure. The Great Exhibition is over and as the remaining displays and exhibits are packed…

  • Freddie Jones: The Mystery of the Ghostly Garden – Kate Foster

Walker Books Australia May 2026 ISBN13:9781760659943 Australia RRP:$17.99 New Zealand RRP:$19.99 I am really loving this new series from Kate Foster, who writes not only entertaining narratives but ones that give us all a much clearer insight into neuro-diversity. Freddie is such a likeable character and his self-awareness, especially using the literary device of first-person…

  • The Girl and the Ghost #3 Grand Opening – Jacqueline Harvey

Penguin Australia May 2026 ISBN: 9781761349430 RRP: $16.99 There will be plenty of delighted fans when this one hits the shelves [my advice is to buy multiple copies] as this fabulous series continues. Josephine, often known as Jet, and her family are gearing up for the grand opening of their restored chateau hotel but there is…

  • Family Secrets: The Girl and the Ghost #2 – Jacqueline Harvey.

Penguin Australia October 2025 ISBN: 9781761349416 RRP: $16.99 Officially, my blog break doesn’t finish until the weekend but how can I resist posting this one immediately, after gobbling it up over two nights! I was very excited to be back in France with Jet, Louis and Gabriel in another adventure. There is an exciting opening event as…

  • The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest – Aubrey Hartman

Walker Books Australia May 2025 ISBN:9781761601453 RRP: $17.99/New Zealand RRP:$19.99 Now, how to describe this delightfully quirky and sometimes dark quasi-horror with heart? It’s a little bit My Dead Rabbit, maybe a little bit Coraline, and a little bit The Graveyard Book. And then there’s A Girl Called Corpse – and soon you will get…

  • The Haunting of Fortune Farm – Sophie Kirtley

Bloomsbury Australia January 2025 ISBN 9781526642783 Imprint Bloomsbury Children’s Books RRP: $16.99 I enjoyed Sophie Kirtley’s debut novel The Wild Way Home tremendously back in 2020 and though I haven’t read the intervening books (one novel, one picture book), I had high expectations of this one. I was not disappointed. This is another MG novel…
