Now in paperback, this is the first in the Our Country Series by this very talented couple (both of whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting). I have no doubt you would be well acquainted by the many outstanding collaborations Mark and Frané have produced, and would already hold them in your collection.
This is another glorious illustrated non-fiction book which would be perfect for any class undertaking those units on Australian landmarks, natural features, geology or the various states, but is likewise as engaging simply as a fascinating read for young people.
From the fossilised dinosaurs of Winton to the Twelve Apostles, from Cradle Mountain to Kakadu, from the Zebedee Springs to Naracoorte, and more – including, of course, Uluru and Kata Tjuta [which still remains as our most favourite adventure to date].
The narrative thread of the travel from one place to another is matched with both a chunk of information and a single poetic line, so this is a book which works on multiple levels, and could easily springboard into both creative or informational writing. This, of course, could also spark some artistic endeavours of their own, perhaps with a focus on the special geographical feature/s closest to their own location.
Maps at either end identify these places of geological and geographical interest, and there is also a very useful glossary, along with a time-line of the formations/events. Altogether, it is a striking and memorable book which will be equally enjoyed by both children and adults. I absolutely love this couple’s work, and relish it both for the text and those superb illustrations.
I thoroughly recommend it to you, particularly for kiddos from around Year 3 upwards.
