Series; Welcome to Our Country

In a week where so many of us are mourning, reading this was poignant to say the least. Here we (creators and educators) are knocking ourselves out trying to raise our Smalls to be decent, empathetic and understanding humans, and yet so many among not just our own national population, but elsewhere around the world, are bent on tearing others down, dispossessing them of all that is life-affirming, and condemning them to even worse. That is evident. And one of the most heinous aspects of that, is that people who are in positions of influence, have abused that position to spread poison and lies and foment discord.
Now that I’ve vented on that point, let me share the beauty of this new title in the series that has been such a run-away success. Each book in this series has further explored the First Nations culture and respect for Country.
In this one, young Harvey has been learning about culture at school, so when he and his mum (who are non-Indigenous) head for their favourite park land, they are delighted to take a walk with ranger, Uncle Boris, who shares insight, history and knowledge with them on Cammerarygal land, (now much of North Sydney). They not only learn so much from Uncle Boris, but gain a sense of calm and peace as they reflect on the meaning of Country and the ancestors.
As with the others, Adam and Ellie have crafted a narrative that is simple to understand, yet conveys deep meaning to even the youngest readers, while David’s illustrations – as always- are full of expression and vibrancy. The text includes language and the gorgeous endpapers serve as an illustrated glossary/dictionary. What an overall valuable addition to any library or home bookshelf!
I truly hope this team has ideas for further titles as I know my mob and many others would love to see more. Let us all keep on teaching our Littles and working towards a time when we do all truly walk together. I highly recommend it, and the entire series, too and in my opinion, regard these as essential to any school collection in particular.
