I know you don’t need me to tell you that this is sensational. Given the two creators how could it be anything but?
The story itself is fairly simple and fluid. Ruby wants – needs – a friend, and as she walks home from school feeling very dejected, she happens across a marvellous creature. And, believe me, when you see Marc McBride’s illustrations you will concur with the description of marvellous.
The creature can’t communicate, but definitely seems in need of help so Ruby leads it home, and installs it in her cubby for shelter. Of course, she realises the creature must be hungry, and she knows it can’t stay forever in a cubby, but what will her granny think if she sees it? Ruby’s resourcefulness in sourcing food, and making the creature comfortable is a catalyst for making a new friend, aside from the creature. And when her granny discovers the creature, she is only too willing to help. Returning the creature to the sea is a challenge but has a triumphant ending, when it is welcomed home by its own kind.
This is gentle and flows as easily as the waves, and is altogether a delight. And these dazzlingly glorious illustrations are just so superb you and your readers will marvel over them at length. Of course, I’ve chosen this as part of my ‘ocean’ PB showcase but it is easily slotted into a classroom or library to underline friendship, kindness and problem-solving.
Recommended for your Smalls from around 4 years upwards.
