My beautiful friend, Kirsty, asked me if I had some suggested titles/resources for Reconciliation Week and that was a prompt for me to create another post focused on First Nations titles and resources. I did also post one in 2023.
Of course, there are [now] many books and resources to encourage cross-cultural embedding in your program but I do think that some are more suited than others.
Y’all know already that my beautiful girls and grandies are Wiradjuri people, so this is a pet theme of mine. What a pleasure to help someone out (especially when she is seriously one of the most exceptional teachers I’ve ever known!).
So here I am with some of my top 2024 picks (plus a couple of older favourites) for this important and deadly calendar event – some updated suggestions particularly ❤️💛🖤. Don’t forget to search the blog for past posts and reviews – use terms like Indigenous Australians, First Nations, NAIDOC, Sorry Day, Indigenous Authors, Indigenous creators etc. Check out what’s happening in your local area as most councils and organisations host special events. And certainly, your school should be planning something – no matter what % of First Nations students you have. This is about us all as Australians, working and walking together.
In 2022, Reconciliation Australia found that 60 per cent per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had experienced at least one form of racial prejudice in the 6 months prior to the release of their Australian Reconciliation Barometer report — this is up from 52 per cent in 2020 and 43 per cent in 2018. These figures underscore the pressing need for continuing our efforts in combating racism. [Koori Curriculum, 29/4/24]
