A few of my mob had commented earlier this year that we needed more First Nations titles about the Torres Strait Islands, and the Ancestors must have heard us because it was shortly afterward that this new title was announced.

I was fortunate to create the supporting materials for YABBA’s VAP (Virtual Author Presentations) this year and if you and your kiddos participate you would have seen the presentation on Thomas Mayo and had access to the slideshow I prepared. Below are two slides that directly relate to this wonderful book.

Bernard Namok Jnr’s father was the man with the winning design for his people, the unique citizens of the Torres Strait Islands. The text outlines the background of the flag’s creation with some information about the TSI and the people and is accompanied by some of the most sensational illustrations you’ll ever see (check the glorious endpapers!)- looking forward to more from Tori-Jay Mordey.

There have been some absolutely outstanding First Nations titles this year – so many glorious books sharing culture and engaging support from non-Indigenous people – but I think this one has been exceptionally well received,because when it comes to inclusivity, and promoting in the teaching sense, there was nothing that fitted to underline the TSI in ATSI.

Let’s hope we see more TSI titles from other creators to go with this stunner. Huge recommendation for this one with a 5 🐚🐚🐚🐚🐚 rating.
