Some time ago I enjoyed a wonderful literary lunch hosted by the indefatigable Michelle Nye (when I look it up, I can’t believe it was back in May!! ummmm, excuse me where have those three months gone?!). One of the great pleasures in that was meeting two creators, Sandra Severgnini and amazing Dr Sarah Pye, for the first time. Sarah very kindly gifted me some of her Wildlife Wong books and I have to say, now that I’ve read them I regret not having come across them earlier.
For your kiddos who are passionate about animals, conservation, science, and exploring other countries, these little books are just the ants’ pants! Sarah met Dr Wong Siew Te back in 2012, and for part ofher doctorate she wrote Saving Sun Bears.
Dr Wong is a dedicated ecologist living in Borneo who is passionate about saving and protecting that island’s rainforest and its creatures. I’ve been following Sarah since meeting her, and it was fascinating to see her most recent trip to Borneo early in August. So many animals! Such dedication from those who are working tirelessly to care for them.
Now there are six books in the Wildlife Wong series plus her Saving Sun Bears book. Each book has facts, a narrative non-fiction thread, questions and answers, activities, photographs and sketches, along with ideas on how readers can also help the rainforests and their animal inhabitants.
It really is a delightful series. Each book is compact and less than 100 pages so even your more reluctant or not-so-confident readers need not feel daunted. In my experience, there are many of that category who do not care much for fiction but totally get into non-fiction especially when it’s interactive. And there are teaching resources – it’s a win/win addition to your units of work on animals or environmental studies. Get your eco-warriors into them now!
You can buy the entire set from Sarah’s website (as above) and I would heartily endorse it for your kiddos from around 8 years upwards. I have no hesitation in giving the series a big 5 🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴rating.
