Annaleise Byrd’s second fractured fairytale is as highly amusing as the first. Basil and Terry resume their reading schedule, continuing on with Grimms’ Fairytales, though Basil is very uncertain about the whole idea of going back into fairytale with all its uncertainties – and dangers!
However, when the boys discover missing words and reach the conclusion that these represent plot holes, about which they have been warned by their fairytale friends, they both know they have to go back if only to warn their chums. Terry is particularly adamant about warning Gretel, while Terry is not averse in the least to another meeting with Briar Rose.
Arriving in the world of fairytale, it certainly becomes apparent that plot holes are increasing, and there is an extraordinary number of chickens missing. Herr Korbes, head of FANCY, is acting oddly and then there’s the whole secret society called Sad Eggs which is led by none other than the frightful witch from Hansel & Gretel.
Who is a villain and who is a hero in this crazy mixed-up fantasy world? And how can Basil and Terry possibly help these characters unravel the twisted plots -and plot holes – without any more damage.
One thing is for certain. Those plot holes need to be plugged or the entire world of fairytale will be going down the gurgler – not to mention, Basil and Terry would be unable to find their way back home. It’s a race against time, and cranky animals, and the machinations of a very insecure Herr Korbes. The antics throughout will have your kiddos cackling as much as any witch and, no doubt, there will be plenty who will be groaning at the possible romantic entanglements that lurk at the edges of the pages.
I need to add a shout out to Sofya Karmazina for another great cover design. Readers from Year 4 upwards will enjoy this one as much as they did Losing the Plot, and as with that earlier title, this would also make a fun read-aloud with plenty of options for creative writing, art or dramatic interpretations. I’m looking forward to being at the Brisbane launch (see here for updates of other launch dates).
Definitely a magical 5 ๐๐๐๐๐ rating for this one.
