I had the great pleasure of listening to Kirli Saunders speak about her work, back in May so had special interest in seeing this new title. I was also particularly interested to see the illustrations from debut picture book illustrator, Mark Chester Harding.

There is an elegant simplicity about both text and illos that has a strong appeal for readers of all ages. The premise is having the courage to step out, try new things, explore, take a risk – any or all of these. As effective educators we know the importance of encouraging our kiddos to be brave. We reassure them that it’s OK to make mistakes or not get it quite right the first time.

This will make a superb addition to any of your teaching programs or sessions on growth mindset or risk-taking. Lock it in for your Social and Personal Capabilities lists now. How do we ever know what we our capability is, until we take a chance and try? It’s a superb title to put on your shelves so don’t hesitate. Kirli’s work speaks for itself, but clearly we have a valuable new name in kids’ illustrating in Mark Chester Harding as well.

I would recommend it for any readers from Prep and onwards to your big kids, who often need reminding to take a shot as well.Some teaching notes may be of use to you as well. Definitely a 5 🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️rating.
