Kamilaroi and Euahlayi author and artist Gregg Dreise always produces extraordinary work that is both beautiful and powerful. And this is another, from the stunning endpapers to the evocative and impactful artwork carried along the rhythm and beauty of the poetic text.
At a time when the world at large, and our country in particular, is faced with arguably more racism than at any other time, much of it being fuelled by disgraceful politicians and unscrupulous media, we must be educating and empowering the young people in our stewardship to be accepting of differences of all kinds. We need a community that is strong in spirit and support of others. We need to be able to trust our fellow humans and help everyone achieve to their highest level.
Gregg has paired this poem with illustrations that capture the very essence of his message – one, I might add, that he has continually presented throughout his work – in such a way that this book can be used with great impact with all learners from Smallest so seniors. I would easily [pointedly] share it with adults and think perhaps a copy should be sent to some of more objectionable and self-serving politicians, except they would wilfully ignore it. Perhaps someone should read it aloud in Question Time (especially for the more uneducated bozos that have managed to crawl out of their swamps and into a cushy position)?
How can there be racism when we are one human race?
Our difference is our biggest strength; not something to debase.
Mob or Ally, 5th generation Aussie or recently arrived, whatever race, colour, creed, ability, gender or socio-economic status – this is a book for all true Australians. We know that they are out there. We know that there are plenty who subscribe to the message of this book. But we also know that those of us who are continue to be shouted down and villified by the ignorant and bigoted minority.
We must continue to be strong in the face of would-be tyrants whether in this country or across the seas. Thanks to Gregg for another book that will be a cornerstone in your collection whether as part of your First Nations/cross-cultural perspectives or your civics/ethics or simply because you want your kids to grow up to be decent humans.
Amazing as always – clearly a 5 ππ§π»π§π΅πΎπ©πΎββ€οΈβπ©π»rating for another sensational book from this talented creator.
