What a perfectly sweet and happy book this is to share with your favourite Smalls! It brings back many happy memories for me of parks and picnics with my own girls and then later The Kid [we still enjoy parks and picnics now she’s an adult -just in a different way!]. I particularly love that this features a multi-generational family with mum, child and grandpa all heading off together. And additionally, a wheelchair mum, demonstrating to all the kiddos that disability is no barrier to fun and family.
The day’s adventure is filled with those simple and thoroughly enjoyable experiences that children love and adults relish : climbing and swinging, playing and pie-making, riding and running as well as that shared picnic with friends old and new.
Emma’s text is a well-constructed rhyme with the insertion of a refrain which the readers will enjoy sharing ‘tick-tock‘ each time it’s repeated as the day proceeds. Leila’s illustrations are just delightful with details to spy and enjoy – I particularly loved finding Bunny (of course!) in all the different poses and moods including the shower cap at bath time! We all want to encourage our children to be out in nature more as well as being more physically active. And let’s remember this is just as important for big people! There is nothing as soothing and restorative as some time spent in the outdoors in quiet and pleasant pursuits.
This would be a terrific shared read especially on a Monday with your little ones and allow them to share their weekend adventures, or perhaps inspire for the next one. Enjoy with your class or your own little people with a 4 🛝🛝🛝🛝rating for Smalls from as young as 2 upwards.
