I’ve only reviewed a couple of Jess Sanders‘ books but do know more because they have proved so valuable in the Personal and Social capability strand and for moments like circle time that they are on many library and classroom shelves. With books for younger kiddos as well as older ones [we have a copy of Love Your Body at our all-female local gym Active Sisters] I’d have no doubt that most schools would now be stocking the entire collection.
Of course, this one is also a great addition for your Smalls who, we all know, can exhibit each of the feelings written about in this one within the space of one day in the classroom! This one is definitely pitched at your lower/mid school kiddos and not only identifies the feelings but, given Jess’ expertise as a professional in the social worker field, offers strategies for understanding, coping with and negating those feelings that can often explode. And, very importantly, offers your readers a validation for their feelings.
With bright and exuberant illustrations from Alice Buckingham, which offer the readers a real opportunity to make connections as the featured children show real diversity. Jess’ writing is upbeat and never didactic which, for me, is a winner and I can see Smalls responding very positively to this one. I can also see some classroom fun with acting out the various emotions and strategies! And, if you’re of the same mind as me – add in Inside Out #1/#2 and the many resources available for those – a perfect complementary resource! I’m giving it a 5 ๐๐ก๐๐ค๐ฑ and an entire full gamut of other facial expressions!
