Reading the preface of this poignant and impactful book, the reader realises the enormity of the past wrongs, as is the case with so very many First Nations families.
The loss of family connection, the erasure of family history and the absence of the knowledge and learning in culture, all of this paired with the increase in bigotry and hate speech continues to fuel intergenerational trauma that has ongoing impact on our First Nations peoples.
While other colonised countries have made inroads into the acknowledgement of the past and are forging new partnerships, it seems that in Australia we are going backwards. Much of this is currently being engendered by people following sheep-like public figures whose sole mission is to stir up hate and division.
Scott’s father was Aboriginal, but absent. His mum had no real connection with her culture or family because her father had been raised by people who were not his biological parents. This disjoint in continuity of connection and learning is a critical factor for many Aboriginal families.
Fortunately for Scott, he was taken under the wing of a caring Aboriginal teacher who, unlikely as it could be, also turned out to be his uncle. Thus Scott was able to connect with his family group and begin to absorb his culture and knowledge. We are fortunate that many schools and communities are striving to rectify this disconnect with traditional Aboriginal learning and language. It is a huge step in us walking together, First Nations and Allies.
The book itself is a simple but beautifully conceived text that encapsulates so much that is important in Aboriginal cultures: Country, pride, art, Elders, Dreamtime, dance, stories, family – and the illustrations from Thomas Readsett are absolutely perfect, filled with emotion and joy.
This is a book not only for jarjums and mob, but for all children to remind them to be happy and proud in their own skin, no matter what colour it is. It’s a hugely happy 5 🖤💛❤️🪃👣 to finish off this year’s NAIDOC special and an absolute must for any collection for readers from around 3 years upwards.
