I couldn’t finish off my batch of Halloween titles with anything better than a Philip Bunting title and this one is a corker! At first glance, yep, having the Grim Reaper – or Grimster – as narrator might seem slightly macabre (well, come on it IS Philip Bunting!) but essentially this is a thoughtful look at the various belief systems of a range of cultures on what happens ‘after life’.
From the ancients – Egyptian, Greek, Aztecs, Chinese – to the Christians to the Zoroastrians, from reincarnation to Valhalla, Philip takes readers on a short but informative exploration of each after-death belief, and the rituals performed by people. It’s quite fascinating and, of course, it goes without saying that Philip’s illustrations are both quirky and memorable.
Framed as a journey – complete with train and departures board, the Grimster takes us on the final trip along with a variety of philosophies. Select your choice and get your ticket ready [obviously, mine is already determined]. Essentially this follows the premise of Maurice Maeterlinck and when the holiday is over, we take a trip to our final destination.
Enjoy! this is just as entertaining and informative for older readers as younger ones, certainly for middle grade especially …..Love it!!! And it gets a full 5 🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦as the very best of this year’s crop of Halloween titles!!
