Kicking off today’s batch of PBs featuring ‘things that go’ it’s another anniversary edition to make us all go – oh wow! 40 years?! And has there ever been a more iconic, well-loved and enduring series than this one which has sparked scientific curiosity in literally thousands of kids around the world?
In 1986 Joanna Cole, who already had some experience in combining science topics with humour, along with Bruce Degen, were commissioned by Scholastic to work on a concept combining scientific investigations with fiction for younger children.
What an absolutely trailblazing and exciting development it was, spawning not only entire series of books but TV shows, merchandise, workshops and more – and I am quite sure, encouraging many children to reach for a career in science of some kind.
Certainly I remember my own girls being so excited to see another title in their book club brochures! and they would not have been the only ones. Now with a delightful anniversary edition, a whole new batch of budding boffins can kick off their own Magic School Bus excursion, and their parents will no doubt love to re-visit as well. Every bit as entertaining and informative as it ever was, is this first shrinking venture into the human body discovering digestion, binging on brain facts, whooshing through the bloodstream and more.
With the trademark small sections of prose and plentiful factboxes, captions and call-outs, kiddos can prowl the pages choosing the tidbits that most appeal to them, all easily digestible by even less confident readers.
