If you live in a place where the bats stream across the evening sky, you will know exactly the thrill of this. Some children will also make connections, others may not know this excitement. But this beautiful book like all those from our marvellous CSIRO Publishing force will help them not only to understand the beauty and mystery of these wonderful and useful creatures, but to know the different types.

What fun to plot their locations on a map as a follow-up! The back matter has, as we expect, useful straight information, details about each mentioned species and a glossary.

David’s rhyming text is simple enough to have it read like a story but it is truly Samantha Metcalfe’s gorgeous illustrations that makes this one stand out – those gorgeous night skies in all their hues of indigo, lilac and pink and the wonderful fruit trees (the netted mango!).

Whether you are in the vicinity of bats or not, this is a great opportunity to educate your little learners about one of our most misunderstood and under-valued creatures, so important to our ecosystems. Definitely a squeaking, raucous 5 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇rating for all primary age kiddos.
