It’s always a pleasure for me to review a new Dannika Patterson book and this one is no exception. It is SO simple and yet so impactful. Just saying, sometimes [well, actually I personally think always] subtle is so much better than sledgehammer.
If you want your Smalls to begin to understand that not everybody thinks in the same way i.e. to gain some insight into neuro-diversity in a easy-to-grasp and highly visual way, this is perfect.
Bruce is not your average duck. He doesn’t like to fly in formation with the rest of the flock. He prefers his biplane. He doesn’t like to eat worms and slugs. He prefers a gourmet sandwich. And when the rest of the flock are lured into a decidedly suspect truck, it is Bruce they turn to for a rescue.
Your Smalls will laugh a lot at the easily interpreted illustrations from Jasmine Berry and the conversations that will follow, sparked by the narrative, will be both productive and have lasting impact.
I think this will be a particularly useful title for the start of the school year as a new class settles settles into accommodating many different learning styles and temperaments. Frankly, it’s a quack up [it had to be done!] and it’s a clever duck 4 🦆🦆🦆🦆rating for Smalls from EC up to around year 2.
