There’s a first time for everything even after 14 years of doing this. This is the first time I’ve ever had two ‘front’ covers to share!! Clever Frané has created a novel adaptation to her usual excellent blend of fiction/non-fiction learning about Australia.

In this one, it’s a journey across the country with our many ‘big’ things as markers as Grandpa organises a special party for Grandma, meeting in the middle – at the Big Galah, Kimba, known as the halfway point on the roadtrip from West to East. Read halfway through the book for one side of the family’s trip to the middle, then turn it round and over and read the other half! What fun is that? Imagine how much this will add to your UoI on Australian landmarks for HASS!! Ticking off the ‘big’ things that your kiddos have seen as well – a wall of photos!! That will add some interest. Maybe do a survey around your school – who’s been to which ‘big’ thing?

Along with the narrative are some snap facts about each place and its traditional owners, which I just love. As well as, of course, Frané‘s always recognisable illustrations which just sing out the colours and whole vibe of our country.

We have a handful of classic picture books that fit that geography learning so beautifully but most have been around for some time and how wonderful it is to have a new one, especially one that’s so unique!

Well played indeed, Frané!! I’m not sure what to choose for the rating really but it is a jumbo BIG 5 🧌🧌🧌🧌🧌giants for readers from around year 2 and most definitely those 2/3s doing their unit on Australian icons.
