I’m saying straight up. I don’t know about the child, but I definitely want to spend time on Nanna’s boat!! If I could still travel to where they are more common, I would love to stay on a narrow boat and this beautiful, evocative book brings all that longing into my mind.

And of course, as a grandmother who has spent the past almost 12 years with my granddaughter, growing from Small to the gorgeous young woman she is now, we have made many special memories just as these two do.

I love that Anna Pignataro was inspired by her own daughter’s spending time with her grandmother – how lovely is that? Max Hamilton’s illustrations are, as always, so redolent of the gentle pleasures these two share each visit: the simple things like making their windchimes from natural found objects, collecting their supplies from the markets, talking to the swans or the neighbouring boat’s doggo. It’s just such a gorgeous interaction between the pair and their surroundings.

We may not have such boats really but there are kiddos who will have spent happy times on boats, be they tinnies or bigger cruisers – some of them even sail boats perhaps but even those with no experience of any marine craft, will love this simply for its sweet narrative and the beautiful artwork. And what a spark for some creative writing of where they might most want to spend time with a grandparent, be it boat, caravan, house or ???

I truly want to spend time here on the water, with this happy gran and grandie. Lovely, lovely, lovely – it’s a no question about it 5 👩🏼‍🦳👧🏻🐚🌊⛴ for any lower school readers.
